Tourist registration in Andorra for expatriates
(MT plates)

The MT plate is a tourist registration issued by the Principality of Andorra, reserved for tax residents outside the EU. It provides access to VAT of only 4.5%, free circulation throughout Europe, and is managed entirely remotely.

Registration in Andorra

What is an Andorran MT plate?

The MT plate - for Matriculació Turística - is an official tourist registration issued by the government of the Principality of Andorra.

It is valid for 1 year and renewable each year, subject to providing proof again of your residence outside the EU.

Key difference from standard registration: the MT plate is not tied to residence in Andorra. It is granted based on the owner’s tax residence outside the European Union.

MT plates are 100% legal and fully recognised across all countries of the European Union and the Schengen Area.

Who can obtain an MT plate? Eligibility criteria

Tax residence outside the European Union

  • Be a tax resident outside the EU - Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Côte d’Ivoire, and many other countries are accepted.
  • Not be a resident in Andorra - the MT scheme is specifically designed for non-residents of the Principality.
  • Provide proof of residence outside the EU at the time of registration and at each annual renewal.

Vehicle requirements

The vehicle must meet strict technical criteria:

  • No right-hand drive - vehicles in RHD configuration are excluded
  • Less than 6 years old at the time of registration
  • Andorran VAT of 4.5% paid when the vehicle is imported into the Principality

The 183-day rule: how to comply

This is the number-one point to watch. An MT-registered vehicle cannot be driven for more than 183 days per year in the same European country. Beyond that, the obligation to re-register locally applies - with the VAT of the country concerned.

To address this in practical terms, we offer two solutions you will not find with most intermediaries:

  • Concierge service in Andorra: your vehicle is managed, stored and maintained in the Principality between your trips.
  • Storage in a customs free zone in France: the vehicle is placed in an approved warehouse, outside the calculation of driving days within European territory.

These two options make it possible to comply with the 183-day rule in a structured, documented way.

Tax benefits

Tax benefits: 4.5% VAT and exemptions

This is the central argument for Andorra tourist registration. Andorran VAT (IGI) is set at 4.5%, versus 20% in France, 21% in Belgium or in Spain.

Concrete example for a vehicle priced at €150,000 excl. VAT:

  • Andorran VAT: €6,750
  • French VAT: €30,000
  • Net savings: €23,250 - even before talking about the ecological malus.

In France, a premium SUV or saloon can be subject to a CO₂ malus of up to €60,000. In Andorra: zero. No additional tax, no weight-based malus, no regional tax.

Country VAT on purchase Ecological malus Additional taxes
Andorra (MT plate) 4.5% None None
France 20% Up to €80,000 Yes
Belgium 21% Variable Yes
Spain 21% Variable Yes

Frequently asked questions

Our experts answer your questions about car registration in Andorra

Yes. MT plates are recognised throughout the European Union and across all countries in the Schengen Area. The vehicle can be driven freely, with no border restrictions. The only constraint is the 183-day rule per country per year - beyond that, local re-registration becomes mandatory.

The fees break down as follows: Andorran VAT at 4.5% of the vehicle price excl. VAT, €1,500 in registration fees (plates included), and €4,500 to €12,000 in management fees depending on the vehicle. Insurance and transport are quoted on request. The quote is free and personalised - simply send us your vehicle’s specifications.

No. Full file handling is possible remotely. Autoglobal Advisory takes care of all administrative procedures with the Andorran government - preparing the file, submission, follow-up, receipt of the plates and shipping to you.

Exceeding the limit triggers a legal obligation to re-register locally in the country concerned, with application of local VAT and, where applicable, the ecological malus. Our concierge solutions in Andorra and storage in a customs free zone in France make it possible to anticipate and avoid this risk in a documented way.

No. Any vehicle that complies with Euro 5 standards, is less than 6 years old and has no right-hand drive is eligible. However, the scheme is particularly advantageous for prestige vehicles: on a car priced at €150,000 excl. VAT, VAT savings alone reach €23,250 - not to mention the absence of an ecological malus.
